This call is part of an ongoing effort by the SLWS to provide good quality books by Sierra Leoneans for Sierra Leoneans. We are soliciting short stories from established, emerging and aspiring Sierra Leonean writers. The goal is to provide a forum for Sierra Leoneans to present their works so that others can read and enjoy them, and can make judgments and develop an understanding both about the subjects of the stories and about the craft of writing.

We won’t attempt to define the short story, for exceptions always exist that escape the definer’s net. We simply believe that the depiction of imagined experiences can provide authentic insights, so we call for stories that expand or refine our minds or enhance our appreciation of our lives as Sierra Leoneans, both at home and abroad.

We recognize the importance of creative works written in our national languages and will consider such submissions and English translations of Sierra Leonean folktales for inclusion in this collection. However, our primary consideration will be that the stories must provide enjoyment and understanding.

We accept only electronic versions of stories. No more than 3 entries per person.

Important note: For standardization purposes, use footnotes for words and expressions readers may not understand. In other words, if the story is written in English, but contains words and expressions from one of Sierra Leone’s national languages, render the English translation in a footnote. However, be careful not to overuse footnotes. They slow down the pace of the reading.
