At 8:45 PM,
March 12th, Lemuel Johnson died at home. Over the last
seven months he endured an increasingly painful and hopeless
illness with good humor, unfaltering courage, and immense
courtesy. He retained a sweetness and serenity of disposition
through his last moments of consciousness and died as
he lived, with grace and dignity, assured of the love
of his family and friends, and seeking to reassure them.
A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Professor
Johnson to aid in the reconstruction of Holy Trinity Church
in Freetown, Sierra Leone, which was severely damaged
in the recent conflict. This was the church that Lemuel's
dearly beloved grandfather, the late Rev. S.S. Williams,
served as priest and canon, and it meant a great deal
to Lemuel as a defining place of memory and imagination.
Contributions should be addressed to The Lemuel Johnson
Church Fund, National City Bank, 505 E. Liberty, Ann Arbor,
MI 48104.
Cremation has taken place as Lemuel wished, and at some
future point his ashes will be distributed in Sierra Leone
and New Mexico. |
