| The AFRICA FUTURE PUBLISHERS
(AFP; formerly in German: Africa Future Verlag) is a scientific
publishing house owned by Mrs. Jariatu Sankoh who currently
resides in Schriesheim, Germany. The AFP's business partner
in Sierra Leone is Sam-King Services in Freetown. |
| |
| The AFP is authorised to issue ISSNs (for journals and magazines)
and ISBNs (for books). |
| |
| The AFP’s official printer is NEXUS DRUCK in Frankfurt. All
books published by the AFP have specially reduced prices when
sold in Africa. The prices of those published in the Sierra
Leonean Writers Series are further reduced when sold in Sierra
Leone. |
| |
| The AFP publishes scientific publications including textbooks,
dissertations/theses, monographs, conference proceedings, edited
volumes and journals. |
| |
| Authors of scientific texts are normally encouraged to submit
camera-ready manuscripts, after the peer-review process. The
AFP can supply specifications for the different forms of manuscripts.
However, the AFP can do in-house copyediting of manuscripts;
this usually increases the cost to be paid by authors, especially
those of unsolicited manuscripts. |
| |
| The AFP is still a young venture and is therefore understandably
less experienced in the distribution of titles in Africa and
elsewhere. However, negotiations are ongoing to collaborate
with established publishing and distribution firms in Africa,
Europe and North America |
| |
| AFP publications will be advertised on the Internet and at
international book fairs. |
| |
| The AFP team wishes to inform that it takes delight in publishing
first-time authors, especially Africans who otherwise would
find it difficult to place their good works with Western publishing
houses. |
| |
| Please see the following for an example of how the AFP makes
a contract with its authors. It should be noted that ALL authors
are expected to pay a subvention towards the publication of
their books. |
| |
| The CONTRACT |
| |
- The author is convinced that his/her book will
be highly marketable and therefore wishes to distribute
it himself/herself. The publisher will ask the author to
pay for publishing and printing an agreed number of copies.
These are handed over to the author.
- The publisher is convinced that the author’s book
will be
marketable and it fits well in one of the house's series, for
instance, the Sierra Leonean Writers Series (SLWS). The following
options could be proposed to the author:
- The AFP takes care of all publishing cost and pays a 5%
royalty of net sales to the author after the first 500 copies
sold. This option is only for exceptional cases where the
book is considered to be highly marketable.
- The author pays a subvention quoted by the AFP towards
publishing. The AFP will pay a 25% royalty on net sales
after the first 200 copies sold.
