The Sierra Leonean Writers Series (SLWS) will publish books by Sierra Leoneans, writers of Sierra Leonean descent from around the world, and writers writing on or about Sierra Leone. It was launched on July 19, 2001 at the Sierra Leone Library Board in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Books are published in the following areas:

Humanities (including novels, plays, poetry, stories, and language studies);

Economics and Social Sciences (including economics, pedagogy, history, political science, health, home economics, and physical education);

Physical and Biological Sciences (including chemistry, physics, general and human biology, and environmental science);

Geo Science (including geography, agriculture and forestry, and geology);

Engineering and Computer Science (including chemical, civil and electrical engineering, and computer science); and

Mathematical Science (including mathematics and statistics).

Recognising that cost will continue to play a key consideration for both private individuals and academic institutions, SLWS operates on a minimum-profit basis and uses the proceeds from sales to expand publishing activities and develop its writers' skills.

SLWS will collaborate with the Ministry of Education in Sierra Leone and will work with curricula developers in the country to determine current needs.

The SLWS Vision is: No scarcity in Sierra Leone of books by Sierra Leonean writers, writers of Sierra Leonean origin, and writers writing on or about Sierra Leone.

The SLWS Mission is: To provide an answer to the stubborn problem of the scarcity of books in Sierra Leone especially those by Sierra Leonean writers and/or writers of Sierra Leonean descent, and writers writing on or about Sierra Leone.

The key objectives of the SLWS are:

To tap the Sierra Leonean academic potential in Sierra Leone and overseas;
To publish good books, especially scientific texts for use in schools and colleges;
To facilitate collaboration between authors of Sierra Leonean origin;
To provide Sierra Leone’s schoolchildren and students the pleasure of reading books written by their compatriots;
To provide good quality but affordable reading materials.

The SLWS will

operate on cost-recovery and minimum-profit basis in order to be sustainable;
use proceeds to:
1. Expand publishing activities and make books more affordable;
2. Pay royalties to authors;
3. Provide reference materials to authors;
4. Fund a secretariat in Freetown, Sierra Leone;
5. Undertake activities of public good in the area of children‘s education in Sierra Leone.

The SLWS has an international advisory board and editorial boards in the various subject areas. It also has a pool of well-qualified reviewers who will ensure that books published in the SLWS will be of international standards.

SLWS will seek the support of the Ministry of Education and other relevant academic institutions in Sierra Leone.
